Against the War in Iraqpublic - created 02/02/05 |

Lies: The Downing Street Memo shows what many have known all along: the case for war made by the Bush administration was a fabrication.
Profiteering: Our Vice President Dick Cheney is a former member of the board of directors of Halliburton. Halliburton is now the largest contract recipient in the Iraqi reconstruction. Halliburton has received multiple 'no-bid' contracts, meaning no one even else is allowed to bid on these jobs. Cheney has been drawing compensation from his Halliburton pension to the tune of $150,000 per year between 2000 through 2005. Um, hello?
Torture: Perhaps most disturbing is the growing consensus that Abu Ghraib is the tip of the iceberg, and that torture has become business-as-usual in the American operational theater. The new doctrine of "extaordinary rendition", legally-defended by Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, officially authorizes handing over 'enemy combattants' to other nations to be tortured. Donald Rumsfeld personally signed orders that an 'enemy combattant' be hidden from the Red Cross for several months.
Fear-mongering: At home, the war is used to generate fear and compliance with a sustained assault on civil liberties, and is divisively wielded as a crude political tool. Incredibly, during the 2004 election the draft-dodging president had the audacity to accuse a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War of not being qualified to lead the country in war time.
An Appropriate Response: Enough is enough. The best way to support the troops is to support the cherished ideals of our Constitution that they are sworn to defend. That means opposing this unwarranted and belligerent exercise of military aggression.
